Balmung Sword
A lovely blue sapphire from the Rush field in Queensland adorns the blade of this broken sword pendant, which we crafted from 18k yellow gold. It was inspired by Balmung from Norse mythology and Narsil from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The sapphire blade was custom-cut to achieve the aspect ratio for this sword. The cross guard is encrusted with a 1.5 mm princess-cut diamond.
Balmung is a mythic sword from Norse and Germanic legend that symbolises the inescapable pull of destiny and the double-edged nature of power - broken in battle by the gods and reborn through fire.
The break isn’t a flaw, but rather a defining part of Balmung’s identity, its destruction marks a turning point in its story, not an end. Later wielded by Sigurd to slay the dragon Fafnir, the embodiment of hoarded wealth and corrupted power. Sigurd claims Fafnir’s treasures to be his own, which are cursed, leading to his downfall. Balmung’s story symbolises the idea that true strength is earned through loss and rebuilding, resilience and the corrupting nature of power.
